Strategic Feeding of Merino Ewes in Late Pregnancy to Increase Colostrum Production
نویسندگان
چکیده
The production of colostrum in 3 1 Merino ewes was estimated immediately after parturition. The ewes varied from 2 to 6 years of age. They were of 2 genotypes (Australian Merino Society and Meridale) and all produced single lambs. Ewes were allocated to a supplemented group (1 kg/ewe.day lupins and lush pasture) or unsupplemented group (lush pasture) in the final week of gestation. The supplementation significantly increased the amount of colostrum produced before birth to nearly twice that of the unsupplemented ewes. No significant differences were found between the genotypes or between the ages of the ewes in the volume of colostrum produced before the birth, although colostrum production tended to increase with increasing age of the ewe. The birth weights of the lambs were not influenced by the shortterm feeding of their mothers in late gestation. High costs of supplements and increased chances of birth difficulties preclude their long-term use for pregnant ewes, but short-term supplementation such as we have described here has great potential as a valuable tool for the reduction of lamb mortalities by ensuring that adequate volumes of energy and immunoglobulins are available to the lamb after birth.

Performance, Health Status, and Colostrum Yield of Twin-Bearing Afshari Ewes as Well as Growth and Survival of Their Offspring are not Affected by Increasing Dietary Metabolizable Protein in Late Pregnancy
The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of two dietary metabolizable protein (MP) concentrations on the performance and health status of Afshari ewes and survival and growth of their lambs during late pregnancy. For 6 weeks prior to lambing, 32 Afshari ewes were randomly assigned to two dietary treatments, containing low (LMP) or high (HMP) MP concentrations. The ewes in LMP (n=16)...

The primary selection objective in the South African Mutton Merino is meat production, while wool plays a secondary role. The Merino, on the other hand is selected for wool production. Respectively 20 and 23 of each genetic different type of ewes were used in a 15-week indoor study to quantify the influence of nutrient intake on certain production traits when fed at different levels of their re...

An experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of supplementing Lori ewes with rumen-undegradable protein (RUP) in late pregnancy on their performance and that of their lambs. Milk yield and blood metabolite profile were measured. Forty pregnant ewes were used in a completely randomized design trial with four treatments: 1) a basal diet (control); 2) with a supplement of 5% fishmeal; 3)...

متن کاملEffects of Supplements during Pregnancy on Reproductive Performance and Wool Growth by Merino Ewes
During the last trimester of pregnancy single and twin-bearing ewes were fed chopped oat hay ad libitum and supplements (300 g/day) of cottonseed meal (CSM) (T1) or barley grain plus urea and sodium sulfate (Bar+N+S) (T2), or CSM and oat hay restricted to the level consumed by the T2 ewes (T3). T1 ewes consumed 47% more hay and approximately 13% more digestible organic matter than T2 ewes. T1 e...
